Bauman bu kitapta, yaşamlarımıza dair bizden anlatmamız beklenen ama anlatmaya zorlandığımız hikâyeleri sorunsallaştırıyor. Yapılması gerekenin bu hikâyeleri sansür etme ya da yanlışlardan arındırma değil, onların, bize dayatılandan başka biçimlerde de anlatılabileceğini göstermek olduğunu iddia ediyor. Çağdaş toplumbilimin, bireysel kararlarımızı ve eylemlerimizi, sorunlarımızın ve korkularımızın derininde yatan asıl nedenlerle ilişkilendirmekte bize yardım edebileceğine inanan Bauman, yaşamakta olduğumuz küreselleşme deneyimini çözümlemekte kifayetsiz kalan halihazırdaki kuram ve kavramlarla yetinmek yerine, yeni bakış açılarının izini sürüyor.
