- In the Duel serialized in the Novoye Vremya newspaper in 1891, Chekhov reveals the complexity of human nature in a striking style. His discussions with a zoologist he knew about survival of the strongest, one of the popular issues of the period, formed the basis of the work on the axis of epistemological and ethical conflicts. The author chose the Caucasus and a small city on the Black Sea coast as the setting for this story, in which he points out human weaknesses, the ability to forgive others and change and improve himself. Educated Russian aristocrat Layevsky lives with a married woman and became a civil servant in this city with which they escaped. However, over time, she has become alienated from women and is looking for ways to end the relationship. Layevski's irresponsibility, drinking too much, spending money without knowing his calculations, and trying to get rid of a woman who is dependent on him arouse disgust in social Darwinian zoologist Von Koren. In the eyes of Von Koren, who can only look at events from the framework of science, people like Layevski are a threat to humanity and civilization, and if the world is purified from such people, it will become a much more livable place. The growing ethical debate and battle of ideas between the two, involving a military doctor and a deacon, suddenly evolves into a physically violent challenge. Show more
