Dolayısıyla kitapta yer alan sekiz öykü de dünyada artık mutluluğun olmadığına ve onu bulmanın imkansızlığına dair sahnelerden oluşmaktadır. Kitaba adını veren öyküden başlayarak bir araya getirdiği öykülerin tümünde geçmiş güzel günlerin özlemi, yalnızlık, içinde bulunduğu toplumla uyuşamayan bireylerin yaşadıkları trajik olayları ele alıyor yazar. Belki de Sadık Hidayet en başından itibaren Aylak Köpek'te kendini ve yıllar sonra aynı karamsarlık içindeki bizleri anlatıyor. Ani bir kararla bir daha dönmemek üzere evden çıkmıştı.
